I did not intend to neglect you –
do not intend –
but still I draw nearer to forgetting, forgetting,
and sweetness, and smiling gums.
You are small and withered in my mind,
precious silver, smiling gums,
drawing babyish cries from my lips,
wax lips, dripping hot destiny,
sealing the frontier
in undeciphered code, unintelligible scrabble game that you
make me play,
your tiles strewn across
the floor of my guilt
(N.B. morning teeth).
I did not mean to reduce you to
a pair of
smiling gums –
do not mean to –
did not intend.
